Episode 61: The Art of Being a Good Employee - Who's Business? Part 2
Hello my friends, welcome to episode 61. We are continuing our discussion of business from last week. As we discussed Byron Katie teaches 3 types of business.
1. God’s
2. Other people’s
3. Ours
What is other people’s business?
I think this is our favorite time of business to get into and again one that we have no power in nor business being in.
This is their work responsibilities.
Their work ethic.
Their words.
Their thoughts.
Their attitudes.
Their choices.
And My business in all of this – is how I respond.
The actions I take.
The way I talk about them.
The way I feel.
The amount of stress, overwhelm, worry, and any other emotion that I feel.
Then there is my business.
-my responsibilities
-my attitude
-my emotions
-my mental health
-my boundaries
-my words
-my choices.
Now I know it can be hard to stay in your business at work.
You think you can’t because:
-your work relies on their work
-you are waiting on them for something.
What can you do?
Let me tell you a story about how this has played out for me.
A few years back I caught myself all wrapped up in other people’s business.
I was mad about the things they were not doing.
I was mad about the things they were spending time on.
I was mad about how they said things in meetings.
I was pretty much mad about everything they did and they were clearly doing it wrong! And I felt I knew how they should do their jobs.
Sound familiar?
Now they were not changing! And they were not responding kindly to me telling them that they should change. And I was not responding kindly to them not changing. You can see the cycle now.
So I had to take a step back.
Talk it out with a coach.
Have a coach show me I was all up in their business and all the time I spend worrying about their business was time that I was not spending on my business.
So I made a list of all the stuff that was my business and decided I wasn’t allowed to get into their business till my business was all done.
Every time I started down the path of their business, I pulled out the list. And got to work on my business.
The art of being a good employee is to start taking care of your business.
My business was my tasks.
My business was making requests.
My business was following up.
My business was what responsibilities I agreed to.
My business was the hours I worked.
My business was the days off I took and how I communicated them.
My business was the decisions that I made about when I checked my email and answered my phone.
Now the moment I got back in my business – Magic happened.
I had the power to do the things in my business.
I didn’t have to be resentful because I held my boundaries.
I could have had positive experiences at work because I didn’t take responsibility for the things others were responsible for.
Where do you need to get back into your business?
What are the things you need to take care of?
Let’s just take care of those things.
If you are exhausted – find rest.
If your phone is ringing after business hours and you need it to stop – stop answering.
If you need to make more money – add value.
If you need things done – do your part, send reminders, and communicate.
It will be fun.
Have a wonderful week.
