Episode 60: The Art of Being a Good Employee - Who's Business? Part 1

Hello, my friends welcome to episode 60.

How much time do you spend thinking about what others are doing?

How much time do spend thinking about what others should be doing?

How much time do you spend thinking about how much others are making?

It is very easy to spend a lot of time thinking about others.

Our brains are programmed to do this.

We try to read the room – make sure we are safe.

We try to compare our wages to others – to make sure we are making enough.

We try to make sure others are doing their jobs so we know that the workload is fair.

But I find that spending all this time thinking about others gets us stuck more in the comparison game than it does us good.

Now for comparison!

How much time do you spend thinking about what you are doing?

How much time do you spend planning for what you will do in the future?

How much time do you spend thinking about the future you want?

How far in the future do you think?

When you consider how much time you spend on others vs yourself how does the amount of time compare?

I want you to consider this.

Now there may just be a few people that you think about what they are doing and others you don’t.

I have seen this with certain coworkers becoming very worried about what another coworker was doing and spending so much time ruminating on their assumptions of what the person was doing.

I have seen employees very worried about what bosses or supervisors were doing or how they were spending their time.

But in reality, all this time spent thinking about others doesn’t help us to be the best employees that we can be.

So it’s time to figure out how to stay in your own lane and how to own your lane.

The mental part of this is getting clear about your business.

Byron Katie teaches that there are 3 types of business.

1.      God or the Universes business.

2.      Other business.

3.      Your business.

So the practice is, when you find yourself in any situation, ask yourself who’s business am I in?

What does this look like in Agriculture Jobs?

What might be God’s or the Universes’ Business?

- droughts

- floods

- natural disasters

To me, these are the things that no human has any control over and cannot prevent, change, or fix.

We only get the opportunity to respond/react to them.

So the event is God’s business.

What is my business in all of this?

My response.

The actions I take.

The way I talk about it.

The way I feel about it. How much I worry, stress, cry, pray, and embrace.

So when we catch ourselves wanting to change it – we are in God’s business.

When we want answers about why it happened – we are in God’s business.

We have no control over what challenges, natural disasters, or weather patterns will come our way.

We have control over our decisions on whether we purchase insurance.

Check-in with your life about how much time you spend trying to be in God’s business.

Next week we are going to talk about other people’s businesses and your own business.

This week simply watch for whose business you spend the most time in.

It will be fun.

Have a wonderful week.
