Episode 40: Formula for Success - Step 2: Try

Hello my friends, welcome to episode 40.

Last week we dug into the first step of a success formula. Just making decisions.

How did your decision-making go last week?

How did it feel to make decisions?

Where did you struggle to make decisions?

Making decisions can be so much fun.

The second step of this success formula is to try.

We decided what we were going to do. Now it’s time to do it.

What is the first emotion that came up when I said that?

We have faced the indecision and overwhelm of making decisions but taking action on those decisions can bring up a whole new layer of emotion.

Fear, indecision, excitement, anxiousness, and so many others.

But trying things is the only way really figure out what works and what doesn’t.

You never know if you know how to ride a bike until you actually get on the bike.

You can watch people do it all day long. You can learn a lot from them but you still never know until you actually take the action and do it. Success requires action.

When we don’t take action, we never get the feedback we need that will actually lead us to success.

Now, why don’t we try things?

Well if your brain is anything like mine, then the minute I decide to do anything remotely scary, new, hard, or just a little different the drama and objections ensue.

They have a sneaking way of sounding something like this.

I know that needs to be done, but we don’t really need to do it today.

I will do that in an hour… then in an hour, well maybe in another hour.

We have to make sure we do that at the perfect time, so maybe we should wait.

You don’t really need to do that. Maybe someone else can do it or maybe it doesn’t need to be done.

You are going to step on someone’s toes if you do that. You better not.

You really shouldn’t do that.

You don’t have time to get it done right so why start?

You don’t have your wording down perfectly, you might make a mistake so let’s just practice one more time. And then maybe we will do it.

Do you really think that you can do a good job of that? Probably not.

It will take too much time and too much effort and it won’t be perfect so let’s wait.

See how our brains can come up with just about anything that will stop us.

Fear

Embarrassment

Shame

Some people call this voice your saboteur.

We all have one. Some of us name them some of us do not. Some of us can tell you whom they sound like – that mean teacher from elementary, the old boss, the mean girls from high school. The collective “They.”

This is the voice that stops us from trying.

This is the voice that stops us from finding success.

So what do we do?

The first thing is always recognizing the voice.

Recognizing that those worst-case scenarios are just scenarios.

Recognizing that you have so much knowledge and capability.

Recognizing that this is just your brain doing its job to keep you safe, keep things the same, and keep things easy.

This is normal.

Nothing has gone wrong here.

And still, you can take action.

You can try things.

You can talk back to your brain.

You can tell it that it might be right. Something bad could happen. It could be right, you might have to do more work and be creative. And you are going to do it anyway.

What do you want to try this week?

Make a decision and get to work.

New Actions bring New opportunities.

Let’s take some action!

It will be fun.

Have a wonderful week.
