Episode 19: Your Future Self
Welcome to Episode 19 my friends. Thank you so much for joining me here today! The last few weeks we have been talking about the past, our past self, the future and today we are going to talk about your future self.
Who do you want to be tomorrow?
Who do you want to be at the end of the month?
Who do you want to be at the end of the year?
How different is that person from the person you are today?
Let’s pick a timeline for this and let’s create an avatar of your future self.
What characteristics do you want to have in the future?
Do you want to be someone who is honest? Kind, accomplished, well spoken, calm, composed, direct?
Do you want to weigh a particular weight or be someone who does a particular job or activity. How good do you want to be at that activity?
Write all these things down.
There is nothing that is dumb or impossible.
Let your brain dream up the very best, very funniest, most successful, most happy version of you that you can come up with.
What would a Monday look like for this person?
What would your future avatar eat for breakfast?
What stores would your future avatar shop at?
What would your future avatar’s bank balance be?
What would your future avatar’s dream vacation be?
How would your future avatar do the dishes?
How would your future avatar deal with someone cutting them off in traffic?
How many hours would your future self work?
How often would your future self see your friends, sit down to dinner with your family or go on a vacation?
How would your future avatar talk to the cleaning staff at a hotel or the CEO of a fortune 500 company?
How would your future self pay for groceries?
Where would your future self buy groceries?
How would your future self talk about their enemies, friends, coworkers, bosses, and team mates?
What would your future self watch on TV or do for entertainment?
Now I ask all these questions because I want you to get to know this future person. I want you to have a full flushed out version of this person.
Remember this is who we are working to create!
They say that the best way to predict the future is to create it. And we want to CREATE your future self.
Now let’s talk about how your future self thinks?
Does your future self blame others for things that happen and give excuses for bad behavior?
Does your future self acknowledge their mistakes and recognize the impact it could have on others and realize that they can do better?
Does your future self think positively about things and see that there are possibilities and opportunities?
What does your future self think about?
What does your future self worry about?
What advice would your future self have for you today?
As we get to know this future version of ourselves, we can start the process of creating them. And may I recommend that you start with their thoughts.
Let’s start by trying to think like our future selves.
Take one thought from your list of what your future self thinks and start practicing that thought today.
Simple changes from “This is a disaster” to “This will all work out.”
Or
“This is a problem” to “Nothing has gone wrong here.”
Or
“I don’t know what to do” to “I will figure this out.”
Remember your future self has the stuff you are struggling with ALL figure out! They have solved the problem, they have overcome the challenge, they are on top of the mountain. They will have some great advice for those that are at the trial head just about to start and I think the most important advice is to get started and don’t give up. Your future self is relying on you!
It will be fun.
Have a wonderful week.
